Builder gone AWOL

I am writing on behalf of someone I know - they hired a builder, someone they sort of knew to do some work for them - taking out a kitchen wall and putting a new kitchen in. It's been over six weeks since he started, he told them it would only take a week. He has hardly done a few days work, when he was there he never really did a full day. He did the floor but did not finish it off properly. He promised to have everything back to how it was - sockets etc. They agreed on a price which he tried to bring into disrepute and charge them more. He then did some of the work and basically went AWOL, he has had no phone or face to face contact since. They went to his home and he was not there, someone who lives there would have passed on the message that they visited but they have still heard nothing. They have been left with a job not finished. Financially, they can not afford any more to put it right. They have a family member who cannot be at home because of the brick dust can make them seriously ill and they just want them home. Can anyone please give them any advice?
