University degree not worth as much as touted

A college education may not be worth as much as you think...

For years, higher education was touted as a safe path to professional and financial success. Easy money, in the form of student loans, flowed to help parents and students finance degrees, with the implication that in the long run, a bachelor's degree was a good bet. Graduates, it has long been argued, would be able to build solid careers that would earn them far more than their high-school educated counterparts.

    What is so funny?

I have lost count on the number of websites I have read regarding degree/non-degree holders.

Same conclusion: I would rather have one than not.

God knows where this $800,000 figure came from though lol

In the Philippines there are so many people without jobs they recruit people with Degree's first.

You need a degree there to work in Mc Donalds

The philippines was once the richest country in Asia

Hi Asheron.......I asked you on another one of your 'End of world is nigh' style threads what you actually 'do'. ..but you may have missed the question. By 'do', I mean how do you pay the bills?

I would love to know just out of curiosity and to be able to put your posts/threads into context.

    It's all a bit odd Asheron....trust me.

I have to add, you could be living around the corner from me in a large van and tapping into a bit of pirate wifi....but if that's the case then your posts make sense to me.

Going to university is essentially a highly leveraged bet that higher education will improve your earning capacity. For many people, its the wrong decision and results in huge amounts of wasted money for them and the government. The government should heavily subsidise degrees where we need more graduates, such as Engineering or Medicine and increase top-up fees on degree where we need fewer, such as Law.

For subjects with minimal academic or analytical content such as Film Studies or Travel and Tourism the government should simply withdraw all funding. These subjects generally do not produce graduates who add value to the economy or will enjoy high earnings (thus paying lots of taxes back to the government). It's absurd to elevate them as 'degrees'.

If the governemnt went down this road then we might as well close down Thames Valley, south bank, university of east london and so on.

If they don't produce enough quality graduates to justify the government's investment and don't improve the job prospects of their students, then closing them would be a good thing.

    >in the long run, a bachelor's degree was a good bet.<

Right now, I'd keep a CV from peeps with a 1st from a Russell Group uni and offer an internship. If they had a Masters, I'd consider an offer of employment.
