Avast with Spybot & Spywareblaster

Since I installed Avast recently, I've noticed that the protection in Spybot and Spywareblaster is being 'turned off.' In particular, every time I go into Spywareblaster to update the definitions, the same 230 adware items in Firefox show up as unprotected, and in Spybot, the whole of Firefox passive protection is disabled. I ran a full scan on malwarebytes this afternoon which showed zilch, and a hijackthis log didn't seem to give any clues either. I even ran a separate scan via Symantec's website to see if it was anything to do with adyieldmanager which is one of the items that is always enabled. I have two questions please. First, has anyone else come across this? Secondly, should I even be running Spybot & Spywareblaster with Avast anyway?

In answer to the first, absolutely no problems here; and yes, perfectly acceptable to run both Spy Bot and Spyware Blaster in conjunction with Avast - I do ;)
  • One small point do you have TeaTimer enabled in S&D it can cause problems if used with Antivirus Progs (performance)

I disabled it after googling what it was.

Excellent point made by debitcard; TeaTimer is indeed a nuisance - yes, disable it.

  • Hi,

I use all three and don't have any problems.

Thing about Spybot, if your using Vista, you have to run as administrator to get it to immunise properly.

Definitely disabled, although SD Helper isn't. Could that be the problem?

Sorry, should've said I'm running XP. Thanks anyways.

Very unlikely tweenie, you could (temporarily) untick and see if this resolves the problem. I have Tea Timer disabled but SD Helper enabled without any conflicting problems. Let us know how you get on.

Right, I've run every scan and checked everything else I can think of, and for some reason the Firefox passive protection in Spybot S&D, and 230 items in Spywareblaster are still being disabled. Anyone got any ideas please?
  • Firefox 3.5 has a new option under both "Clear Recent History" and "Settings for Clearing History" (when Firefox closes) called:
    • "Site Preferences"
If you check the Site Preferences option, any custom-configured site preferences (including cookie blocking, image blocking, pop-up blocks/allows etc.) will be cleared. This includes the protection that both SpywareBlaster and other tools like Spybot S & D set.
