Victim of Debit card Fraud

While I was checking our account today online I noticed a transaction for £152.04 taken from the account by a company called Caleigh Harbour LL? strange one I thought. When I got home I checked with OH and he did not recognise it either. I rang the bank and they confirmed that a transaction had been done either by phone or internet for dental/hospital equipment. My card has now been cancelled and this has to be investigated by their fraud department and it could take up to 2 weeks. This has of course left us short:mad:but I do realise it could have been a lot worse.
Does anyone know how this could have happened I didn't lose my card or anything and I always use secure sites and our computer has security on it. Its amazing and scarey the things these people can do.
Has this happened to any of you?

I had a similar problem with a credit card. According to my card issuer the most likely reason was 'guessing' my card number!
After a little internet research, I found it is possible to generate valid-format card numbers. Of course, not all valid-format numbers actually exist, so it is a matter of trial and error to find a card number that does exist! Once you have a valid card number (and expiry date) it is possible to generate the 3 digit CCV code on the back of the card!
In my case, my details were processed through a fake website and I quickly convinced the card issuer and the payment process of this. My card was credited within 2 days!
I suggest you find out what website the card was processed through and try to see if it is a genuine website! If you need any help to do this, just PM me.0 -
Some of these people don't really have your bank account information. But instead the information that they do have are mostly your name, address, phone number and probably your social security number. And they use these information to get your bank account information. Phishing for information is a very common fraud tactic especially if they already have the basic information.
Although some sites are secured, it is still very risky to use a debit card when purchasing online.Mr. Mulla0 -

What's a social security number?
Mr.Mulla appears to be from the U.S.A. ( location states "Manhattan"), so it will be in reference to the United States Social Security Number (similar to our National Insurance).
Although contributions from anywhere are welcome, you need to remember Mr.Mulla this is primarily a U.K. based consumer website, so when posting please keep that in mind (you may confuse the posters).Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.0 -
I had the same problem on my credit card, same company CALEIGH HARBOUR LLC has taken £153 in USD, i called my bank and they said the same thing- online transaction, payment for some medical equipment. I can not beleive they can do it to people over and over again and dont even bother to change company name. I need to wait up to two weeks to hear from bank on this dispute, hopefully i will get this amount back.0

I was caught out too, by everbright smiles. I signed up for a free trial expecting only to pay for only the P+P.I can honestly say I DID NOT see any terms and conditions on the advert and not on the email the company sent me.The following month I got my credit card statement and there were 3 transactions on it that I did not recognise (for £231.88 together). I rang CC and asked what these payments were for as I did not authorise them. I was asked if I had signed up for a free dental trial online and I said that I had but only received 1 part recently and that I did not get 2nd part. I had to ring CC fraud department who sent me out forms to fill in regarding this matter but it seemed hopeless (also CANCEL credit card IMMEDIATELY so that no more "subscription charges can be paid out to this company). I contacted the adverting stardards agency to let them know what this scam was. I also tried ringing everbright smiles and emailed them continously(I had to CANCEL their "subscription" even though I never signed up for that) . I also emailed consumer groups, citizens advice to see if anyone could help me out as it is a lot of money to lose. I rang last week to my credit card company, with a very heavy heart, to pay my bill and asked what was happening with these payments to Everbright. I was stunned and overjoyed to find that my credit card had refunded the full amount(£231.88) back to me. My thanks to TESCOS for helping me out regarding this problem.:T
If you get caught up RING IMMEDIATELY your credit card company or bank to CANCEL your card. After this EMAIL the company and CANCEL your "subscription". Keep an eye out for further problems as some of the companies sell your details on.
If you do want to try the teethwhitening kit from Everbright CANCEL your membership within 10days after replying to their advertisement. Keep an eye on your statements. BE WARNED.
I hopefully have learnt my lesson and will not be responding to "FREE" trials or anything like that. I will be more wary in purchasing anything online.
Hope this helps someone out.:beer:0
