Hi, I took dollars for tipping at the AI we went to and also some pesos for when we went into the shopping area although it is just as easy to pay in both.
We also needed approx $55 per person for exit tax, not sure if this will apply to your daughter but worth checking.
Sorry I'm not sure of the benefits of the Nationwide card, so hopefully another Op may respond on this part of the query.
Hope this helps..This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

anyone any ideas as to the best card to take with them0 -
According to Tripadvisor you would be best with Mexican Peso's rather than dollars. This is because you will be squeezed on the exchange rate. Also if you are using them as tips then the locals would prefer Peso's.
Summer01: I cannot see the point of going AI if you are going to carry cash to tip. All the write ups say gratuities are included. Tipping the maid, barperson, waiter on the last day may be the option. Obviously if you leave the complex then tipping would come into play. Tripadvisor has a section on tipping in the resorts.0 -
Hi, tipping is personal choice and I always tip at meals etc unless I get really bad service. I am sure you don't have to tip but alot of people do..
It is worth looking at TA as there is alot of info on currency and tipping however I would take a mixture of both if I was to go again definately. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
We went AI in Mexico and gave occasional tips to the staff who took a personal interest in us and asked about our home life, our plans for the day and suggested places to visit. They gave more than just basic service and we felt they deserved to be rewarded.
We took peso's. Personal choice as I felt happier paying in their local currency. They only take dollars to please Americans who are the bulk of the tourists as they stereotypically hate changing currency and working out exchange rates. Here I go again on my own....0 -
Hi We have been to Mexico a number of times and we fly on Sunday to Cancun,We always take Pesos because the first time we went i took US dollars and we always received change in Pesos and you always lost out in the exchange. Please note your daughter will have to pay a departure tax of 525 pesos £25 approx at the airport0
