Flash Player Wants to DL whole video before playing UPDATE - NOT JUST A FLASH PROBLEM

hello.
using IE8 and having flash installed has worked perfectly well for, well for ever, until yesterday.
now whenever i want to watch a video that requires flash the whole video has to be DL'd before it actually starts playing whereas before it would play and DL as it went along.
i thought it was simply flash not working till i realised my net was working away DL info, if i leave it long enough it will DL everything it needs and start playing fine.
i am sure it must be some kind of setting in either IE or flash but i cant find it.
i have tried Opera and FF and they both work perfectly, and just how IE was working till yesterday - they play videos as it also DL's.
any help appreciated.
edit: flash in IE is working as usual for other flash related tasks, its just the video issue.

Hi
I don't think it's a problem with the flash player. As far as I know it's just a plugin. Probably Adobe Shockwave Player. There aren't any 'preferences', it just works.
Maybe IE8 has a setting that you can tell it what to do with various types of media. Either view it in the browser or download it.
Some help is needed from an IE8 user.

What version of Flash Player do you have ?0

cheers, just about what i thought about flash, and yes, its adobe shockwave flashplayer and its "enabled" when i check the "manage addons" section.
really is annoying as its worked for years with no thought on my part.
i have unintalled etc and done all the usual stuff.
i think you may be on to something about it being a IE8 setting, i am currently scouring settings but cant see anything
a bit annoying having to DL 100mb to before even seeing the start of any flash video

ok, i have found this is a DL issue not a flash issue, the problem mearly shows itself in flash too.
i just DL'd a random 45mb file. normally it would offer you the option to save the file or open and on saving you would see a progress bar of the DL until its all done, at any time you could hit cancel.
whats happening now is as soon as you click to DL nothing appears on screen but the file DL's completelty and at the point when it has finished THEN asks if you want to save or open, on clicking save its saved instantly as its already DL'd....i hope that all makes sense?
its not a big problem on files but when you want to watch a flash video and it has to DL the whole thing before it starts playing its a problem.
there must be a setting somewhere. i havnt changed anything but we know PC's are wierd things.
edit: how annoying, i just DL'd a file from microsoft and it worked as it should, now i am completely lost as it now appears to be random sites that cause the issue as some flash videos do play as they should too
edit: thinking i was smart i uninstalled IE8 and reverted to 6, its still the same

I'd advise reinstalling 8. IE6 is susceptible to security exploits.
Might be worth trying a different browser (FireFox maybe) to see what happens with that.0 -
yep, i have reinstalled IE8 anyway....
as in post one, i have tried Opera and firefox and everything works perfectly and how things were working in IE8 until the other day.
i am too stubborn to just change browser, i have to know why its doing what it is and need to fix it

How about using system restore back to the most recent checkpoint where it was working?0
