The biggest problem in my view is how difficult it is to get the best tickets. I've paid £10 for a train ticket from Leeds to London in the past - nobody could argue that £10 for a 200 mile journey is anything other than a bargain. However, I (or rather, the boss) has paid £150+ for me to take the same journey on a different day. That is where the problem is IMO.

When we're talking about a private industry, I accept that I sometimes have to jump through hoops and tailor my demands to what the service provider wants to do for me. I don't expect to have to do the same however for a tax-payer subsidised service.

No it isn't, a monthly season ticket for Luton to London zones 1 to 6 is £372.90. To include the Luton buses on that ticket is an extra £35 per month.

Add Luton station parking charge of £102/month + fuel cost of driving from my home That makes £500/month for using the train.

Can't make journey to station in bus (the explanation will require what I already mentioned in earlier posts).

So, train travel cost still remains most expensive :cool:

The converse question is Why is private car use so cheap? It used to be the case that only well-off people could afford to own and run a car.
