Average electric use of appliances
Options
Newbie here,
Can anyone tell me where I might find a list of average electric use or cost for typical appliances such as washing machine, iron, tumble dryer, lights, etc?
Also, pointer to electricity cost meter info would be wonderful.

Have a look on your appliances. E.g. a 60W light bulb will use 60W or 0.06kW every hour it is switched on.
You can then multiply this by your unit price to give the hourly cost. E.g. for the 60W light bulb above, multiply 0.06 by your unit price.0 -

That I am afraid is no good at all for the majority of appliances.
This is because virtually all appliances have a thermostat or variable power, so they are not using the full power while operating.
For instance, a washing machine might be rated at 3kW(3,000watts) and take 1.5 hours for a cycle.
Using the calculation in that link it would show that it uses 4.5kWh and costs 45p @10p a kWh.
However in practice a typical cycle would use 0.4kWh to 0.6kWh and cost 4p to 6p.
Similarly a fridge freezer might be rated at 200watts. as it is on 24/7 the calculation in the link will show it using 1,750kWh in a year and cost £175. In practice £30 might be more realistic.
This is a better link:

Thanks for that link Cardew, very useful. Will stop worrying about the need to keep the DVR on standby overnight to update the guideplus, it costs pennies a year!0
