£3k for a car+insurance+tax?

As the title suggests really I'm after a car and I've got between £2k and £3k to spend but ideally that has to cover insurance and tax as well.

It will only be me using to commute to work, travelling 400miles a week in it on motorways.

So I need something reliable and economical, cheap to insure (26yr old male) and something which isn't too unbearable to drive on motorways.

My initial thoughts were either a Fiesta or Focus. I've seen a few advertised with around 60,000 miles on the clock for about £2.5k I think.

Anybody got any other suggestions?

Look at a few cars on autotrader etc then do a wee check for insurance. No point looking at a car thats 2.5k without finding out about insurance, for all you know it could be 1k to insure it!

Personally, I'd be looking for a late escort/early focus or Mondeo (similar age) diesel.

Sorry should have said, I did have a quick look on a couple of comparison sites. Quotes ranged from £450 for a 1.25 fiesta to £600 for a 1.6 focus if I remember correctly. But like you say it does depend upon insurance. Are the insurance groups a good picture of the likely quote or is there quite a lot of variation within the same insurance group?
  • I would be looking for a diesel rather than a petrol if you are doing 20k + miles per annum.

Based on 20k miles a year in a car doing 40 MPG your annual fuel bill would be approx £2500.

If you can push that up to 55 MPG (which should be doable if its all motorway miles like you say) your total fuel bill for the year will be only £1818.

Diesels are idle for sucking up motorway miles, even the smaller engines have plenty torque.
