That's right, your applicable amount would go up, so if you are not getting the max HB and Council Tax because of your income then having your applicable amount going up should mean your HB would go up too. Have you been getting the max HB all along?
  • yup been getting the max amount of HB and CTB...that side of it is all fine and dandy, tis just the rest of it that's annoying me!

How much is the Severe Dsability Premium worth? I get Incapacity and High DLA, but nothing means tested as I didn't think there was anything else I could claim for.

The SDP is £52.85 per week though you may not get that amount as it is a component part of Income Support. It depends how much your other income is. If you get the highest rate of DLA care you also could get an Enhanced Disability Premium of £13.40

As a single person aged 25+ this would add up to:

    £64.30: Personal Allowance
    £27.50: Disability Premium
    £52.85: Severe Disability Premium
    £13.40: Enhanced Disability Premium

    Total amount = £158.05

less any Incapacity Benefit. DLA is ignored for this calculation, so it would amount to £158.05 plus DLA. But it has to be DLA highest care to get this amount. DLA Mobility is ignored in the calculation if you receive that too.

You have to have less than £16,000 in savings if under 60 to get anything and less than £6,000 to get the full amount.

That is for a single person, if you have a partner you may get less or nothing, depending on circumstances. In addition if anyone receives Carers Allowance for looking after you you can't get the SDP.

Thank You. I do get High Rate Care and High Rate Mobility and no one claims Carerer's Allowance, and I live on my own, but I also get a small pension as I had to take early retirement, due to ill health. Does that mean if my total income is more than £158.05, excluding DLA I can't claim, or do things like Mortgage and Council Tax get considered?
  • If I were you I'd put in a claim anyways...all they can do is say no after all!

mortgage interest can be paid by Income Support and can be added to that £158.05, therefore increasing your weekly "needs" allowance. Council Tax can be covered by Council Tax Benefit which you claim from your local council. If you claim Income Support you can ask for it to be backdated for 1 month. You can ask for an award of Council Tax Benefit to be backdated for 6 months but you have to show good cause why you never claimed earlier. So even if you get Income Support, which will passport you to full Council Tax Benefit (although there used to be a limit on which council tax bands they would pay in full, I don't know if that still applies) you can also make a request to have the Council Tax Benefit backdated for 6 months.

On Income Support you will get free prescriptions, free NHS dental treatment etc.
