Hi,
My parents have around 30 VHS-C tapes and I said I'd look into converting them into a digital format and store them on an external hard drive.
I have looked into the possible options and I don't want to buy a VHS/DVD recorder because I don't want to actually have the videos on physical DVD's just files on a laptop.
Other options appear to include buying a capture card or an external A/D box, however I got lost understanding these!
If someone could advise on the simplest/best/cheapest/quickest solution to convert the VHS-C tapes it would be greatly appreciated.
I have quite a high spec sony vaio laptop and 500GB external harddrive - the camcorder is an old JVC (I'll put the model when I get back from work)
Any ideas welcome!

No idea why you don't want them on dvd's - it's called backing up, in case your pc/lappy goes t**s up. What outputs does the camcorder have?0

the camera has 3 ports audio (white), RF DC OUT, and video (yellow)...0

A cost is involved and I would stick with only 30 odd tapes. Another video recorder would be cheap backup....about £50 I guess..
A DVD recorder is >£300 and would do the job and more.
30 tapes would mean ~60hrs to record in real time and God knows how long to convert to another format if you have a fast and modern PC.
Forget about it for now! Panasonic do a PVR (I have one) but never used it to copy to DVD, why would I..the tape may last another ten years and it's all on repeats on TV or iPlayer or in the library if needed.0 -
