Nervous of my own challenge - reduce or stop spending!

Yep, either stop going to the shops or only leave with enough cash to buy what is on your shopping-list.
A REAL eye-opener is to keep a spending-diary where you jot down every single penny you spend for a week. It's very, very sobering and might prompt you to keep on the straight and narrow.
Before you buy anything just ask yourself one question: "do I really need this"? Recognising the difference between need and want is very useful indeed.
Good luck, and you'll find all the help and support you need on here.0 -
When you go out, bring a little cash with no credit cards. When you want to buy something, you'd better make sure whether you want it or not. No spending is the best way to save. A shopping list made before you go out shopping will help you a lot.:ji love to be loved by you:j0

Hi Everyone,
I am trying really hard to live within my means and save some money. I am trying to stop unnecessary spending and instead of buying... use what I have, recycle and mend.
I am going to stop buying new clothes and limit myself to Jumble Sale buys.
My goal is to pay off my overdraft and start saving!
Thanks for reading
FRIZZ:)
Try setting yourself a realistic, but fair budget. When you get paid, remove any excess income above that into a savings account. That way you won;t be tempted to spend it, and you'll be amazed at how quickly it builds up :T
We have an existing thread on this subject, so I'll merge this one so that you can see what others suggest.
Good luck :j

I thought I'd seen the last of this thread...................out of sight out of mind
Yesterday I went to theatre to see 'Waiting for Godot' (free tkts), a walk round shops in west end (didn't spend) and meal in Zizzi with friend.............all for £6!
Today I'd planned to go to Asda, may still go but with only cash  ,scary still,
to buy some of the frozen veg that is going through with the MOC at only 19p???????????
Also want to buy one (for each DGS) of those plug in fake fish tanks, seen them locally for £15 each. Tried to search on internet for them cheaper but don't know what they are called!
Really wanted to get these last month and resisted.
I'm glad I've made some of you think about where the money goes because to be truthful I never have, now I've done it I think, and hope, its going to stay with me.
If not I'll just keep looking at this post

LilacLillie you ROCK! I shall have to pay you to give me lessons in moneysaving, recently I have been SPLURGING! No good for me not to go to the shops because I splurge online. Got to put a stop to all this, but I say I shall do it and then never manage! Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0

I'm afraid to say that you made me really start to think about the amount spent and I'm just so grateful
.................. mine was a case of out of sight out of mind too!
Don't worry about inspiring people though LL - some have greatness thrust upon them and all that jazz ( can't remember the quote must be my age or something like that!!!!)
I had a quick splurge on a purple kimono dressing gown yesterday and it was at one of those really exclusive shops you know the one "Charitee!"May you fill up the great clutterbucket of life and may all of your leaks be in cheese sauce
Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without:cool:0 -
Oh Caterina, I'm dissappointed
It was you who made me think of my challenge to start with, you are an inspiration to me.
I suppose anyone can fall off the wagon, you can't be an :A all the time, it just wouldn't do............................I couldn't even try to live up to that.
So you've been told, try this mantra at times of money exchange 'I don't need this, I don't need this, I don't need this'.
People around will think you mean the stress of life and give you a wide birthe, no matter, go from the temptation place and when you have you'll find you really didn't need it after all.
If you did......................Go back and buy it

As long as it was purple it was money well spent

Ah well LilacLillie, I shall make amends by lending you the "Ration Book diet" book (interesting!) and you can also have a look at the "40s style" book (fabulous!) and once I receive the "We'll eat again" book I shall cook you Woolton Pie, how's that?
I have also received the scales today and they are great so I am really not regretting this expense as I have wanted and needed a set of kitchen scales for as long as I remember, my only scales are teensy weensy diet food ones (the ones that weigh a few ounces only). Never had grown up kitchen scales before and these are so beautiful as well as useful and they weigh up to 5kg (11lbs). So at least some of the money was not spent on (entirely) frivolous things.
Am I (partly) forgiven?

Caterina, Woolton Pie:eek::eek::eek:I absolutely loathed it when I was a kid as my Mum used to force feed her family on it.Rationing was tough in those days.I swore I would never eat it again, along with Snoek which was a disgusting tinned fish that was available just after the last war, or tripe which I think even if I was extremely hungry I would be hard pushed to eat again,Lots of stuff from the 1940s-50s are best left there.:D
P.S.Well done to LilacLille for persevering through February though I think you did very well at only £43.Good luck to anyone having a go this month0
