Make sure that all the fans and vents are unobstructed

Depends on the laptop and the design of it. Some laptops using nVidia graphics cards got uncomfortably hot and this caused video failure. The man without a signature.0

What is the CPU usage like when you are doing what you are doing? Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and click start task manager. Click Performance tab in Windows task manager. Just thinking on the lines that if theres some rogue application using the CPU a lot that will cause it to get hot.0

if its getting unusually hot while it might not be about to critically fail it won't be doing it too mu ch good long term (ie shortening the life of components, if something is close to going operating it very hot might well be enough to tip it over the edge etc).
you might want to get yourself one of those laptop coolers..... or use an oven rack as per a recent thread about laptop coolers on here

CPu usage over about 2 mins was anywhere between 0% and 100% but averaged at 30-50% which means nothing to me ( is this correct).
Thanks for your help everyone

If you want to rule out the battery/charging circuitry which you mentioned in your initial post as the source of the excess heat then just remove the battery as you say you are running it on the mains.
It is pretty common for laptops to pick up lots of fibres and have clogged up cooling airways so that is the most likely problem even if you think it isn't. You'll need to use google to work out how to get access to clean it out.0 -

Maybe OK. If its single core system that is perfectly normal. If it was dual core and stuck at say 50% use all the time it would indicate a program was not working properly or some malware maybe. Systems vary but my desktop processor more than doubles in temperature when its heavily loaded. Just a thought really but its odd that its changed behaviour just today.0
