Claiming VAT on Hotels and accommodation

Options
I am VAT registered in the UK, can i claim VAT on hotels and expenses when i stay away for business purposes

Comments

  • I believe as long as you have the amount of vat on the receipt you shouldnt have any problems.
When ever I stayed in a hotel i always asked for a vat receipt to make sure it was stated on the invoice..but as far as i know you cant claim vat on things like petrol unless you are a delivery company.
But you can always call hm rev and double check with them:)

The caveat for reclaiming VAT on hotel invoices is that only the VAT registered business can reclaim the VAT, so if the invoice is in your own name then the business cannot automatically reclaim the VAT.

Also if you means business purposes as in having to stop overnight o several night whilst working for a client then yes, but if you are using the hotel to meet and greet customers you know, in the hotel foyer), then this is not reclaimable as it is business entertaining.

You can reclaim some or all of the input VAT on fuel purchases depending upon whether the company pays for all fuel (ie, fuel card, fully expensed) or if it just reimburses the driver for business miles.

For fully expensed you need to look at the road fuel scale tables (http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/budget2009/bn69.pdf), and for business mileage only claims you need to look at advisory fuel rates (http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cars/advisory_fuel_current.htm). For this last one, you need to keep VAT receipts issued by the petrol station if you want to reclaim the VAT.

You can go back three years from todays date if you've not done this previously, but still subject to you having those receipts.
