MandM Direct charging for out of stock items

I placed an order with MandMDirect last week and they say that your debit card is charged at the point of dispatch, yet I got charged for an item which turned out to be out of stock. My invoice was stamped 'out of stock' for this item but I have received no notification of refund or acknowledgement of my emails querying this. How can they charge for items they cannot produce? I also feel that they want to force you to chase this up over the phone, as their 0871 number charges quite a lot more than a local rate number! (10p on my Virgin line and 40p on my T Mobile!) So they are making more out of the customer there. I feel really quite angry about this as it seems like a deliberate attempt to drudge money out of the consumer unfairly. Can anyone offer any advice?

Do they have an email address so you can contact them that way? It's possible that a refund has been made but it will take a few days to get into your account.0

Yes, I have emailed twice but they have not replied. I finally rang this morning on a landline I managed to find (one they refer international customers to) and after a long wait got through and the man at the end said it would be refunded and and show back up in my account in 3-5 days. Hopefully it will. The fact they never attempted to contact me themselves about this really annoyed me. Its the first time I have used Mand M Direct and its put me off using them again.0

To be fair they are normally pretty good.0
