Tax relief on a Camper van needed for work

Options
hi all

ive been self employed now for 7 months and all is going well. however its time that i bought a new van for work which will also be my accommodation while im away working.

now im wondering how much of the van cost i can claim back through my accounts? also do i need to buy through a dealer to get a official receipt or will buying privately still work??

didnt know weather or not there was extra relief if it was accommodation as well as my works van

looking at spending up to 8k max on my camper. looking at getting a VW t4 conversion

i use the van for carrying cones and other things i need for work as well as all my gear to live out the van. i work as film set security so a camping type of van in an essential part of my job.

I can't help you re tax but I have to say that my son has recently converted a large 16 seater bus into a camper van - toilet, sink, fridge, telly, cooker and two single sofas or beds or double bed. It is registered now as a camper - not a bus and is quite impressive but he didn't pay anywhere near what you are suggesting. He bought an old caravaqn for the fittings, bought a 16 seater bus and sold the seats and the tachometer. He has used it for a year and will sell it this coming season. I would find it extremely limiting to actually live in it though.
    Good luck with your project.

You will claim capital allowances @ 20% in your self assessment, you will not include it in your accounts as it is not a revenue expense. The allowance is restricted to the business use and this will take account of the nights you sleep in it.
I would imagine it would be beneficial for you to include all the running costs of the van in your accounts, rather than the 40p/25p pm method, but do a comparison for a couple fo months to check. Don't forget to add back the private use on your self assessment.
If you are buying privately, just get the vendor to sign a receipt.

i seem to be getting different stories :( so confused

some are saying i can claim up to 100% then minus the amount i use it privartly so 80%/20% would be a pretty close estimation. as i have a car i use when im at home not working

As a complete aside, they're hard work to insure for business use.

Perhaps you would be better off getting a caravan, it would be easier to justify business use, you could claim tax relief on some of your standing costs for you car (which you already own) also you wouldn't have to pay the same insurance/MOT/maintenance costs.
