How do I deal with dog chewing?

Bakers Complete is just 4% meat (see below), so there are no worries about it being too high in quality protein for your dog, quite the reverse. Given that the kibble is pretty colours, I wonder if additives could cause problems as they do with children.
"Cereals, Meat and Animal Derivatives (min. 4% Chicken and min. 4% Fresh Meat In The Soft Moist Kernel), Vegetable Protein Extracts, Oils and Fats, Derivatives Of Vegetable Origin, Various Sugars, Minerals, Yeasts, Vegetables (min. 4% Vegetables In The Green Kernel)."
Pets may love tuna but it's not wise to feed them the human variety as it is full of salt - no reason why you couldn't feed a decent tuna cat food occasionally such as Feline Fayre 400g tins (50p Asda 70% tuna).Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -

Thats a good alternative. Thanks, didnt think of that!0 -
You can get fish flavoured dog foods that are probably more suitable, the proportions of vitamins and minerals in the cat food will be different from the dietary needs of a dog.
It shouldn't matter if it's just an occaisional treat though.
If you have storage space you can get good dog food cheaply from an animal feed store. The one my parents use is called sticky working dog mix, 'working' because it's high calorie, but you can get a normal version as well. It costs about £7 for a 10 kilo bag and has much less vivid colourings than bakers.:coffee:Coffee +3 Dexterity +3 Willpower -1 Ability to Sleep
Playing too many computer games may be bad for your attention span but it Critical Hit!0 -

I was wondering that aswell as I have first hand experience of this. Not with children, but myself.
A few years ago my neighbour gave my dog a tube of 'Skittles' coloured sweets for Christmas.
I wouldn't give them to the dog but took a couple of handfuls myself
I've never taken 'speed' but imagine it might be similar. I was absolutely hyper.
After a night of lying awake for hours with my mind whirling the Skittles went in the bin :rolleyes:0 -
Bakers is THE worst food you can possibly feed your dog.
Get her off of that and onto something like Burns, Orijen, Naturediet and then with the new training and exercise regime you'll be home and dry.A dog with a behaviour problem needs help not punishment.0 -

Is it really ?
I always thought it best to avoid lots of tuna because sea food accumulates heavy metal toxins like lead....... (Says she, having just eaten home made tuna fishcakes and salad for tea.......)Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -
Some rescues make new owners agree not to feed Bakers because they have experienced behavioural problems with dogs fed on it, which they believe may well be due to the artificial colours. You could feed something like CSJ 'That'll do!' which is a minimum of 20% meat, and free of artificial nasties, and about £11 a 15 kg sack!0

Thanks all for your replies. I am reading them all but haven't got much time to post during the week.
Will definitely change the Bakers now after reading all your comments!
Managed to do a 40 minute off lead walk this morning and yesterday, so had sleepy puppies yesterday and both flat out now. Benefited me to as I got on the scales and am horrified that i have put on a stone since last June! so its a win win situation really!
Played lots of games over the weekend when I had more time and so far so good. No serious chewing problems. Limited the toys as well. Ive got to be honets though, Jessy (Patterdale) is really strong willed and she just didnt understand the part about bringing the ball back, or sitting and im sure shes got selective hearing as far as her name is concerned too! LOL! The 2 year old JRT has got it down to a fine art. She knows if she doesn't bring the ball back i cant throw it for her, Jess was just running into her bed and hiding it!
I lead a pretty busy life. I work full time shifts, am doing a degree and have 3 children so I just need to be more organised really to ensure the dogs are getting their time as well. My husband walks them too and my boys do but have been slack lately. My dad passed away on Dec 4th so to be honest everything has been up in the air. But with the passing of my dad it really has made me realise what is important in life, and making sure my animals are well looked after and properly cared for is definitely part of that.
So lets hope in 6 months time I have lovely behaved dogs and should hopefully be at least a stone lighter!!!!0 -
Hi our rescued Jack Russel has just let herself down today. She has been with us about 5 weeks now and has been near perfect. We have only had 2 wet patches due to misunderstanding.
Today, she chewed through the lead to my computer mouse! She has never chewed anything other than her toys and we were in the house at the time.
I didn't know 'how to tell her off' so I showed her the damage and, in a stern voice said " No! Naughty girl - bed !" and then excluded her. She hung her head and went to her bed and sat there with her ears down. I felt really bad, but very cross.
I am a first time dog owner.....How should I have dealt with this?
TIA
