Sony Viao laptop - any good?

Dear all,

I am looking to buy a laptop and was thinking about buying a sony viao and was wondering whether they are actually any good as i know that Sony are quite popular. However, that doesn't mean that their laptops are any good, so can anyone recommend a sony laptop or any other good laptop? I'm gonna be using it for surfing the net, e-mail, you tube, music, word processing etc. Many thanks to all.

PS. I 've also heard that samsung laptops are quite good?

  • I have a Sony VAIO P-series. Lovely piece of kit.

It came with Vista, but once I'd nuked that for Windows 7 and didn't install the ton of crap that Sony put on it, it was great.

Sony are a bit more expensive (you pay for the name). Ordinarily I'd prefer Dell for better value.

Search the forum for "faulty sony laptop", and you will see this is not an isolated case. Dells are better value, and last longer.

You will be paying an extra £50-100 just for the Sony name - not worth it in my opinion

Sony are really good. If it works, you're onto a winner. If it goes wrong, you'll have issues (but I guess that goes for anyone these days).

I didn't buy my Sony (it was an xmas gift). I have bought 2x Dell laptops in the last year as gifts, and they're excellent spec, excellent build, excellent performance and reliability, and excellent value. If I was buying for me, I wouldn't go anywhere other than Dell.

Not much help I guess... but I love my Sony :) If you like the look, go for it!

it's what you think of it and your budget that counts, not ours
  • Thanks enigma52 and I understand your comment, but most people on this board have more experience and knowledge than me and it would help if somebody would give me an opinion based on their knowledge regarding the spec/price.
