Boarding out loft - few questions

I want to board out half my loft and i have decided to use b and q tongue and groove pack about £5.39 (per1.19 squared) but I have a few questions.
My loft insulation is 15cm which I know is below required standard but is upto the top of joists.
Job 1 - Raise the joists - I know I need to build on the joists but what wood do I use?
what clearance do I need?
and If the joists currently run vertically so I extend on them the same way Or do I build on them horizontally?
J!!! - Where to buy wood from (im in Liverpool) if ppl know of local traders?
Thanks

Purchase wood: http://www.beersltd.co.uk/ - one by great howard street. Alternatively, just try wickes!
Are you boarding up the whole loft? Erm why???????????????????Motto: 'If you don't ask, you don't get!!'

Just boarding it for storage. Prob start off doing half and then get the whole lot done eventually.
What would to extend beams tho?0 -
Chuck out what you think you want to store. You know in your heart that you will never use it. Then add the extra insulation. If you feel you must board then run the new joists at right angles. With a bit of luck it should only cost you a fortune in new wood.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
I need the storage have a baby aged 3 months and will have to start to put stuff away soon for next baby. So need the storage0

I would run 4x2 at right angles to the joists giving you another 100mm or more when compressed a bit , 6x2 would be over the top just for storage,
price up your 4x2 from a few local builders yards and ask for free delivery0 -
Wickes very often do 3 for the price of 2 on loft boards and I'm sure other diy stores do as well. If there aren't any deals on at the moment, it would be worth doing just a bit for now and doing the rest when you can get a good deal on the boards. Plus, it's amazing how exhausting it is getting the packs of boards up through the hatch so it's easier to do it in stages.0
