Why would a renewal notice, with an extra year of NCB's be a lot dearer than last year with no changes. Am curious as DD rang her current insurers and they couldn't tell her why:o

The reason is they expect you to just renew and not question it. Many insurers give a discount to new customers. Your mission now is to go to http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/compare-cheap-car-insurance read, digest, and go and do. Then call up your present insurer to see if they can meet the cheapest quote you get or cancel!

It pays to not be loyal!

+1, staying with your previous insurer is rarely the best option. If you do get a better quote give your current insurer a ring and ask them to beat it, it saves the hassle of switching and often they will at least match it.

Apparently car insurance is up something like 18% this year (I can't remember the figure I heard) mainly due to all these bogus whiplash claims etc.

I'm sure they'll try and bump it up even more due to the accidents during the snow too.

Her premium dropped last year with only 1 years NCB which is why I was wondering why it would have gone up quite a bit. Have tried comparison sites and also some direct but if they are coming up cheaper now they're increased when (if, as she's having a break from taking her test!) she passes. Just been told there was someone arrested for vandalising over 100 cars in the town last year so I bet that's a lot of it:o
