Is there still money to be made on Ebay

My wife wants to make some extra cash from home, starting with selling some of our childrens clothes that are now too small. Is ebay still the place to start? or are there other alternatives?

Cheers,

Yes, lots and lots of money, if you can learn to play by the rules, source stock cheaply and sell with a good service.

There are plenty of other alternative selling venues, but none come anywhere near the level of ebay for traffic, and traffic = sales.

ebid is the second most popular auction site by volume of listings, but when you look at http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/ebay.co.uk it barely registers on any comparison chart.

  • She could also sell them on netmums or mumsnet? That would only be for local buyers, but there are no fees.

    Cheers,

If they're good/popular brands (I found Next, Monsoon, Gap etc do well) and in excellent condition then yes. Anything less is probably not worth the bother as you have to wash them, iron them, photograph them, list details.
  • Yes you can make money on ebay... BUT IMO these are changing times....long term I believe that unless ebay has a radical change things dont look good for them

Ebay used to be a cool thing to do....we were all in an ebay family so to speak, Heck I finished work and set up my own business and for 7 years have used ebay as my main sales avenue.... BUT now... Im looking at other options its just another selling avenue thats not easy to work with (as a business seller)

    All IMO of course

They certainly are evolving a lot but their taking on of some big outlet sellers will work in their favour. The small business sellers will continue to get squeezed out and Ebay will continue to send mixed messages to private sellers for some time to come. If the outlet sellers bring in the revenue and police themselves successfully (of course there are a few with problems) then that's the way they'll go.

As for being able to earn on Ebay, its certainly possible and there are still lots of small business sellers doing it.

Its always worth checking other sites too as others have suggested. Do the research on completed items on Ebay and see what was sold, for what and when.
