Ii realised ms works was preinstalled on the laptop but from what I can see is exactly the same as open office.
Err, no. MS Works is pretty poor compared with Open Office, which is not quite as compatible with Microsoft Office as Microsoft Office is! (Surprise?!)

We tried openoffice and found it to be very annoying.

Amazon are selling a 3 user licence home and student for £60.

If you install this on computer A then on to computer B and then on to computer C, how does it know not to load on to computer D?

I assume it asks for your computer's product key from the sticker on the bottom. If this is the case, could you not enter computer A's product key into computer D on the install?

Why would it ask you for your Windows product key?

Part of the installation will be to generate a code based on the configuration of the hardware in the machine that the software is being installed onto. This code will be registered against the product key of Office so that any further installations would fail validation.
  • ive used open office before but found it to be a little slow and memory intensive.

student license for £40 would be my prefer option.
or office 2010 beta for free also :)

MS Office Standard is £39 for two licences at software4students.

Never tried them, so don't know what they are like.

I have bought from them, no problems at all.
    I have a cunning plan!
Proud to be dealing with my debts.

  • OP, If you liked Office 2007 then why have you not gone for the Free Beta Office 2010, just the same only better. Free use til' October. Did you read the replies ? there is a link to Office in one of the previous posts.

One alternative you COULD do if you want Microsoft Office, is the same thing I have just done. The home and student verson (but please check this before you buy incase they have changed it) comes with 3 licences. This means you can istall it legally on 3 different machines. So see if any of your son's friends want it and have a word with their parents, or anyone you work with. This is how I did it and cost us £25 each

Technically you can't do this. I was once bored and read the EULA which means you agree to use it on 3 PCs in the same household. I have no idea how they would catch you out on it, but interesting to know nonetheless.
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
    Now 20% cooler
