why can I not transfer balance from argos mastercard???

I currently owe just over a £1000 on my Argos Mastercard, The opening rate of 0% has now ended and I have for the last month or so tried to transfer my balance to one of my other cards when the company has offered a 0% deal, I have never paid any interest on any balance as I have always transfered the outstanding balance and got 0%, hence the reason I do have around 10 credit cards, thankfully I only have the one balance! Whenever I have rang to transfer from the Argos card I have usually been asked several times to repeat card number then have been told its an unrecognisble card??? just cant understand it, Have just rang Barclaycard as they offered 0% and was told that couldn't transfer as they own it, what do I try next?

Is this a store card and not a credit card?

    No it's a Credit Card.

The problem the OP has is although it's an Argos Mastercard it's actually a Barclaycard, I have one and on my credit report there is no mention of any Argos Mastercard but i do have a Barclays Credit card listed.

Have just rung Barclaycard as they offered 0% and was told that couldn't transfer as they own Argos.
That's right, you would be trying to pay 'em off with their own money.

However, this doesn't explain why your other CC providers turned down the request. Where have you applied unsuccessfully?

If memory serves, the Argos card has a 19 digit number.

To help you further, we would need to know which cards (apart from Argos and Barclaycard, obviously) you have at the mo or have held recently, also whom you bank with?

  • I have so far tried to transfer balance to my asda card, a post office credit card, and I think I tried my MBNA card aswell, no luck with any, also It is definately a credit card not a store card (I already have that one) and its a usual 16 digit numbered card
  • Other cards I have are; capital one, egg card, HSBC, virgin, and lloyds tsb american express and mastercard, none of these however are offering a 0% balance transfer rate.

Perhaps in the same way as the Vanquis card no.s behave with certain other card providers, you need to request the new card provider to do a "Manual Transfer" providing them the sort code and account number stated on the back of the Argos Barclaycard bill along with the 16 digit card number :o

    Argos have two cards:

One being the argos store card which can only be used to purchase goods from argos stores or argos online.

The Argos Store Card is a twenty Digit Card.

The second being the Argos Mastercard which is a Credit Card that can be used anywhere, although it's advertised as an Argos Mastercard it is in fact owned and run by barclaycard.

The Argos Mastercard is a sixteen Digit card.

A few rather special cards, like MBNA, will allow you to transfer an overdraft to them (in other words, transfer cash from the credit card to your current account), at balance transfer rates. A 4% handling fee applies if you request a money transfer, but you then have funds in your bank account to pay off Argos. Alternatively, if you order credit card cheques from MBNA, the handling fee is around 2.9% -3%.

Caution: if you have existing transactions on your MBNA card, I'd pay these off first. Also, remember not to spend on your MBNA card ;)
