Honda Civic Hybrid

Options
Hello all,

I am looking at changing my car. I have been reading mixed reviews (various car sites) about the Honda Civic Hybrid. Does anyone here have experience of the model, and if so what's their opinion?

Many thanks

Can i ask, why specifically the Civic Hybrid?

A Golf 105 BHP TDI will give better economy, is a better car and is a similar price.

I bought a passat bluemotion there as the hybrid options didnt stack up for me...

Matter of opinion, give me a Honda before a VW anytime, but then that is just from my experience.:p

Hybrids, great around town for avoiding spreading fumes and for the quiet of not having to run an engine.
Now few cars acheive their official combined fuel consumption figures, mainly the fault of the far too contrived EU test conditions that actually massively favour the nature of a hybird and smaller engines in general.

In the real world bigger engines are not as thirsty as the tests would suggest used on the open road and hybrids like the Prius are the vehicles that fall short of official fuel consumption figures the most.

So why are you thinking of a hybrid?
Is it for the claimed low mpg?
Especially if you drive on the open road the majority of the time that Golf previously suggested, the diesel Honda Civic or a car with one of the BMW style "efficient dynamics" (they got into this first on a mass production scale) type packages of fuel saving measures (Toyota Optimal Drive, VW BlueMotion, Skoda Greenline etc.) may serve you better.

I have driven the Honda Insight and it was one of the worst cars I have ever been in. It's only plus side was 52 mpg on the mainly urban test drive.

The Insight is supposed to be an improvement on the Civic hybrid so heaven knows how bad that must have been.

Biggest benefit is the exemption from the £8 congestion charge.

Then he has a hell of a commute ;)
  • Thank you all for your replies. I currently drive a Fiesta. But would like to change my car for something bigger. The hybrid cars (Prius and Civic Hybrid) appealed. I would be looking at getting a nearly new vehicle, and would go no more than 3 years. I have seen some models c £7,500 - £10,000.

The Civic Hybrid appealed beacuse of its reported MPG, reasonable low insurance group, low road tax and the lower omissions. The Civic Hybrid seems to have a good specification. But I have not been able to take one on a test drive. The two Toyota garages near me said they need to get one on and they don't know how long it will take. They offered a test drive in the Insight - but heard worse reviews. I shall look at the other suggestions too.
  • I also have no need or desire to commute in London!
