Porthkerry, Barry. South Wales.

Hi. I will be staying at Porthkerry caravan park next week and wondered if anyone had any ideas what I can do near the area. I know there is not much on the site. I will be taking a 2 year old and a 16 year old.
Thank you.;)

Porthkerry Park is quite nice for a picnic and there is also a pebble beach at the park. Barry Island has a good sand beach and a permanent fun fair(not sure what operating hours will be).

Not sure if you have a car, if not there is a train service into Cardiff which has a good shopping centre, The Castle(in the city centre) has a childrens festival 22-23July, Millenium Stadium which has tours if your 16yr old is into football or rugby. Also try Cardiff Bay and Barrage which has boat trips round the bay and up the river to town. There is a little road train which goes round the bay area in the Summer not sure if that is running yet. Open top bus tours go round the city and Bay areas. There is a free Food and Drink festival in the bay 14June-16June http://www.cardiff-festival.com

Penarth is worth a visit (between Barry and Cardiff), has a promenade and victorian pier. Bristol channel boat trips run from this pier the first of these goes on 21July to Bristol and Avon Gorge http://www.waverleyexcursions.co.uk There is also a pretty good leisure centre indoor pool at Penarth.

You could try Cosmeston Lakes country park and medieval village which is between Barry and Penarth. Or the Museums (all Free). Museum of Welsh Life in St Fagans is good it's an openair exhibition of Welsh buildings which have been dismantled and rebuilt in the grounds of a country house.

If you want Beaches there are a few others to the West of Barry. Try Llantwit Major, Southerndown and Ogmore.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you want more info.
