Help please - My daughter applied for a credit card and was rejected. She is 30 years old, lives in a rented flat and never missed a payment, has NEVER been in debt, never borrowed any money, she likes to pay as she goes and hates debt. The reason she cant get a credit card is because she has never had one, always using Debit cards in the past. I guess she has a poor credit rating, she has applied for two cards, been rejected, so her credit rating will get worse with these rejections. Surprisingly for me, Nationwide refused her, but she has had a steady job for 3 years, and her salary is paid into her current account which she has held for over 10 years.
Where does she go from here. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Unusual the bank (or building society) where your salary is paid in would refuse someone straight away. Might be worth checking the credit files, could be something amiss there, if not you have to start with a initial credit card lender like Capital One's high interest card or Vanquis and clear it religiously every month by Direct Debit for full amount.0 -
I would suggest she goes into nationwide and asked why they rejected her.
if she has banked with them for 10 years and kept her a/c well then that should count for something.0 -
Is she on the electoral roll for the same address as her bank account?0

Although having said that, Nationwide are particularly strict.
My mother used to hold a Flex Account with them and they wouldn't even give her a debit card after five years of custom and never incurring a penny in charges.
I think she will need to build up atleast some credit history with a sub-prime card, Vanquis, Aqua, Capital One Classic, and Barclaycard Initial, are designed for this.Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48
