RuthnJasper wrote: »Hello - I've been reading this interesting thread, as I have found this site - and the forums in particular - to have helped me SO much in rebuilding my life after a complete breakdown and financial devastation. I've recommended it to all friends and family - and Martin should be instantly knighted!
But what I wanted to say here was a thank-you to Dollparts for highlighting the harming effects that Troll-posting can have. Who knows why Trolls do their posting? Misguided "fun"; a sense of power and importance otherwise lacking in their sad, pathetic, lonely lives...? It's beyond me. However, when I was at my utmost lowest ebb, around three or four years ago, I had tried a number of times to take my own life; that's how desperate I was. If I had come onto one of these forums seeking help, comfort or advice and had been the victim of a Troll, I do not doubt that it would have been enough to have prompted me to attempt suicide again. No doubt whatsoever.
Happily, I am so much more recovered now, and very positive about life.
Sadly, though, I suspect the day might not be too far off when a Troll finds him-(or her)self in court for Constructive Manslaughter after their ill-conceived actions succeed in tipping a vulnerable person over the brink.
Have a great weekend everyone. x
Thanks for that, it's useful to actually have my concerns 'personified', although of course I only wish it could be something much lighter hearted. As unfortunate as the subject may be I think your willingness to speak so candidly of your own experience goes to show just how harmful trolling has the potential to be.There used to be a street named after Chuck Norris, but it was changed because nobody crosses Chuck Norris and lives.0 -
Thank you SS & DP - I appreciate your comments very much. This forum - for me - (even though I haven't posted too much as of yet) is an absolute godsend. A literal oasis of calm, practicality and genuine warmth in a world seemingly gone mad.
I am not ashamed of the fact that I have suffered (and, in a somewhat lesser way, continue to suffer) from severe depression (and I don't mean 'stress' or 'feeling a bit down'). Real, proper, depression is an illness beyond the sufferer's control. It is also - left untreated - a terminal illness. Any sufferer who does not have the appropriate treatment WILL, like a cancer sufferer who refuses their medication, ultimately die through their own means - they will grow increasingly certain that they have no other option but to end their lives. Depression is a lack of serotonin flowing to the brain and it is therefore completely impossible for a victim to rationalise their fears and present situation. But, as I said before, I am recovering thanks to doctors, a change of jobs and the right medicine for me. I am taking control of my financial problems with an IVA. It's difficult; but now I can recognise that there WILL be an end to this, and I believe I am a much stronger person for having been through the severest depression. (Also, as an aside, did you know that you are apparently ten times more likely to recover from depression if you have a cat, dog, or horse? It's actually in my medical notes that I wouldn't have survived if it weren't for my dog Jasper - a rogue, but a beacon of strength, unprejudiced love, and quality company). But I digress.
I stand firm in my belief that Trolls are despicable. They have no idea of the misery they cause - and the devastating effect that their petty small-mindedness can potentially have on people who are ill and cannot rationalise as others can.
MSE has helped me so much with practical advice (I was fortunately successful, thanks to MSE, in reclaiming bank charges which had forced me into one meal of a slice of bread with salt and pepper on it per day). I have a lovely little home, after some five years of being on a council waiting list, I have a job, I can afford to eat, and most of all, I have Jasper by my side. Probably, a lot of you supportive MSE forum posters may never know or even guess how much of a difference you make to those who are suffering. But you DO make a difference. And you also represent everything that is good about the human race. I hope to become a supporter and an encourager myself, now that my life is getting back on track.
BUT - that doesn't mean that we have to hold back from "getting Mediaeval" on the Trolls...! Jasper-dog would like to employ all Trolls as a cheap alternative to turkey at Christmas... Bring 'em on!
Every good wish to all of you nice people.:A

hi ruthnjasper
i have heard of the positive affect a pet has for someone with depression. i'm glad things are looking up for you and you're on the road to recovery.
the trolls - i wonder what kind of people they are in 'real life' who can spout such vile bile at someone who is vulnerable. my brain just can't compute their nastiness.. we'll keep fighting the good fight eh

Some excellent posts, my friends:)
And a little bump from sizzler:T0 -
Hi ruthnjasper
That was a brilliant post - thanks for speaking so frankly. I am so pleased you're well on the road to recovery.
Re trolls, I favour spit-roasting them. I really cannot understand the mentality of some of them, they must be seriously disturbed to get any pleasure from what they do.
Anyway, BUMP to keep this thread in view..The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time
