Does anyone know if there is such thing as a wireless router signal booster which you can just plug into the mains? I router is up in the srudy and sometimes if I use my laptop downstairs the signal gets a bit temperamental. Any advice I'd be grateful

Yes you can
There are several ways to boost wireless to centre of the house
Cheapest way is moving router
Or replace aerials on router and network cards

Or wireless access point
Or wireless homeplug

I improved my network coverage by getting a wireless n router, n cards with extra 5db aerials
Or just get homeplugs

How far away from each other are the two devices? Are there walls and floors in the way?0 -
Did you ever watch Blue Peter, handy with the sticky backed plastic?

It would be worth looking as to whether this may be the case. Are there other wireless networks within range of your laptop?
Also, if it's patchy, you may find that a plug in USB dongle will have better reception than the inbuilt one. This would also allow you to use a USB extension lead and fix the dongle in a location where the signal is best.0 -
You could also run a cable or, use another router to extend the signal (as a repeater). Others will be able to advise better as to how to setup the latter.0

As diable says, have you considered that it could be a neighbouring wireless network hampering yours in the location of the laptop?

InSSIDer is a useful tool for checking which other wireless networks are around you and which channel they're using.0 -
