Gas Fire leakage and chimney sweeping

 We had a new gas fire fitted in December and the front of the fire became scorched. A man from the company that manufactured the fire has been out and he has said that the fire only just passes the recommended gas test - this has worried us and we have been advised that we need to have our chimney swept is this normal? Any advice would be welcome.
