My mattress is brand new! Would this make it less supportive?

No, it would just make it softer until the quilt starts to become lumpy and you have to throw it away.

It will be like sleeping on a little cloud, like a little care bear!

I have a Northern lights mattress liner, and its basically goose feather quilt under my sheet. Lush.:D:j

Well, if you want to keep it but are short of space, you could get a large vacuum bag from a poundshop - I have recently discovered them for my spare bedding and it is amazing how much less space they take up, especially with the big fluffy duvet! Make sure it is large enough though, I found that the 60x80 size wasn't quite big enough, but worked for 3 pillows, while the 70x100 was just ok for a thick double duvet.
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!
