What do I do with my old quilt?

I bought one of the bounce back quilts on offer recently, which means that our double quilt is now surplus to requirements - as the other bedroom alreday has a quilt and we haven't got the space to store it. Although the old quilt is ripping a little, the lining seems to be intact. It's a felt-type lining so the oSer in me feels that I *should* be able to do something with it.

Any ideas? I was thinking I could make a draught excluder but this would involve getting pretty material from somewhere as I don't have anything suitable. Or could I make cushion covers and stuff them with it? Again, purchase of material necessary. And I am an amateur at sewing!!

I am grateful for any suggestions.

Hi Tara, you could use an old quilt to cover windows to keep out the drafts. For a dog bed. Sit on it on the grass in the garden when we have some summer.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.
  • Put it under your sheet for an extra soft layer, and a bit of extra heat in the winter cold.

Do you have pets? You could cut it up and use it as pet bedding. I donated one to my local dog rescue who use them to line the cages.

We do this, fits great, nice and snug under a fitted sheet, keeps you extra warm so saves on heating too!

Thanks for the suggestions so far! I have no pets princessleah. I like the under-sheet option though, and am still pondering the cushion idea (OH thinks I am mad, he doesn't really 'get' OS but I *will* convert him ha ha).

  • I'd second (third?) the under sheet idea. If the mattress on the spare bed is a bit unforgiving - as many spare mattresses are - then an old quilt on top of it can make all the difference.

I like a nice hard mattress!!! :rotfl:

Well, the mattress idea certainly seems to be popular! Will try it later, it can stay there out of the way for now anyway and then I can always perfect my sewing skills and put it to good use some other time xo

  • If you have any animal rescue centres near by they might appreciate it. I know the one I got my bunny from is always thankful for old bedding & towels :)

I wouldn't use it to revive a worn out mattress as it is important that the mattress gives you good support.

My mattress is brand new! Would this make it less supportive?
