Laptop Power adaptor, (I think its called that!!)

Options
I'm sorry for not being very technical but my laptop isn't charging and when I swapped the lead with my daughter's lead (we have the same laptop) hers is working fine. Is the lead called a lap top power adapter? I've looked on the HP website and found an adapter but it doesn't have a UK plug on the end of it and I can't seem to find one on the internet. So the questions are:-

1. How much do I expect to pay
2. Do I have to buy a HP part
3. Does it matter what wattage the item is

Thanks in advance - Gin :)

Try something like the following. You can get similar elsewhere

there should be a model number on the base of the power pack /adapter. Most adapters take a normal power lead which plugs into one end (with the three pin plug at the other -) The other wire then plugs into your laptop.
Your daughters adapter may have the same voltage but different amperage so your laptop may be overworking it (may be making the unit very hot)

Could try having a search on ebay by using the model serial number - Also a google search (UK only) for the same serial number may list a few suppliers. Then its just a case of comparing the prices

Do you really mean that just a lead is faulty, or do you mean the power supply box and the lead that plugs into the laptop combined? If so

    1. Depends where you buy - A universal power supply from Maplin should be around £50, secondhand genuine HP power supplies on Ebay should be quite a bit cheaper.
    2. No, but some laptop makers use really unusual connectors to try to force you to buy their (incredibly expensive) genuine parts.
    3. The voltage must be the same. Wattage must be the same or greater.

If you really do just mean a lead, which one? What does it connect from and to?

Her lead and psu works on your laptop, or your lead works on hers?

The wattage is important, you cant use one with a lower wattage.

Id find out which part is actually faulty and then go from there,
  • All you need to do is give PSA parts a call and they will sort this for you in seconds.

As stated before is it the lead that you need or the "brick" part?
