My monthly bill from BG (Click Energy 6 With EnergySmart) for Jan is £136.78...ouchies, especially as my heating is only on for 6hrs on weekdays and 9hrs on both sat and sun.
Not a lot i can do if want to be atleast semi-comfortable in the house and that is only reaching 16c in the front lounge unless i whack the boiler upto 3/4 or full lol.
My house is over 120years old and is an end terrace with double glazing and good loft insulation but i have an alleyway to the back garden which runs from the front under the bedroom, landing and bathroom to the back. That by itself leeches in the cold from outside so not sure what i can do about that :(

For 54 hours a week during one of the coldest months in years, that does not seem too excessive, it's around £4.88 per day.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I suppose when you put it into that perspective it isn't too excessive, i'm going to look into fitting a wireless room stat to see if it will shave a little off my usage. I'm just glad i decided to stay on the normal direct debit and not switch to the vdd as in theory it sounds good to only pay for what you use every month but i prefer the easy budgeting of a normal direct debit lol.

You could try under floor insulation, but it's a lot of effort.

One tip I always remember from my mother :) Close all the curtains once its dark. Surprising how much heat is retained that way. I dont think you can do a lot more if you have double glazing, plenty of loft insulation and are being careful. Does the house have cavity walls?

I did think about underfloor insulation and kind of dismissed it due to the effort involved and the fact my central heating pipes and gas supply to the combi boiler run along that route.
Unfortunately with it being a 120'ish year old terrace there is no provision for cavity wall insulation :/
  • We have just had our Jan bill from British Gas, £ 200.21 for gas and £ 142 for electricity.

Whilst it seems high, the heating was on during most of the recent cold spell. Did,nt realy consider potential cost, just wanted to stay warm which ultimatly comes at a cost.Plus we have an extra 3 adults in the house (grown kids) who will happily leave every electrical appliance on without a thought of the cost.(I am so looking forward to when they move out and get their own first gas and electric bill)Oh are they in for a shock when the gas and electricity fairy no longer visit them in their own place.

I'm on BGs Click Energy 5 with Enery Smart and my bills were:
    Gas: £250
    Electricity: £70

I have been comparing tariffs and thinking of switching to eDF.
  • Ive just submitted my monthly meter reads online, BG Online saver with energy smart, Jan 1st to Feb 6th, based on meter reads, predicted bills:

    Electric:£83.02

    Gas:£152.90

For the coldest period, not too bad, 3 adults in house, house occupied for 4 days out of 7 and all evenings, heating on for 10 hours a day on 18-20 degrees, sometimes longer, and we're in an end of terrace with all but 2 windows double glazed but wooden outside doors save for a patio door in lounge, reasonable loft insulation. Electricity is way better than I imagined, I have become somewhat obsessed by the monitor jobby in the lounge, but it does read massively over, that's set to a target of £4 a day, yet the predict bill feature says £2?

    CC limits £26000

    Long term CC debt £0

Total low rate loan debt £3000

    Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.
