Wrong gas meter for my flat - advice needed

I live in a 2 storey flat in a converteed detached house. There are two flats in the building, and each flat has its own elec. meter and gas meter.
We had an engineer round today to sort out a problem with our boiler and do our gas safety certificates. Upon testing the gaas meters he pointed out that the meter we thought was ours is actually for the other flat, and visa versa. I think that means we have been paying for their gas usage over the last couple of years!!
I haven't yet informed my supplier. Does anyone know what will happen if I do let them know this? Will they simply swich the readings round and start billing us corectly from now on, or will they look at the usage of the two flats and try to charge us more/offer us some money back?
At present i think both flats use the same supplier. However the other flat is now empty 9as of last week).
Any thoughts or advice???

There have been several threads with the same situation.
From the gas supply company's point of view, I suspect they will have no problem starting from scratch on the day they are told which meter belongs to which house.
The usual problem is Flat A claims they are super frugal and have been paying the bill for Flat B who have their heating on 24/7 @ 25C!!!(or vice versa!!!)
With the other flat now being empty it might be less of a problem0 -
I have exactly the same problem in the flat I'm in now.
You need to speak to the misconnections department.
Don't expect it to get sorted out any time soon, although you will only have to pay for what you've used.
Read on if you like....
It was a new build and the builders were told on the day I moved in that they'd cocked up but denied all knowledge and said it couldn't possibly have been their mistake.
The energy company (Powegen/EON) were told the next working day. 2 and a half years later they still haven't corrected the mistake.
The call centre didn't believe me and it took several calls to get through to their misconnections department. They were quite helpful and said it happens all the time. He noted it on my account and said it would take a few months but would get sorted out. They also said I didn't have to pay my bill until it got sorted out but decided to so I didn't have a multi thousand pound bill to pay sometime.
I asked to pay by direct debit to get the 8% discount and they said I couldn't do that because my account was in dispute  so took them up on the not paying the bill offer.
After a few months I started getting letters saying I owed them money and they'd be cutting me off etc.
I phoned them up again to find out what was going on and they said their system said the problem had been resolved. I told them the truth and they were shocked that I'd been waiting so long for it to be sorted and they gave the number for the misconnections department to call. Before I hung up though I set up a direct debit....
This time the misconnections guys said that every time I phone with a meter reading to give readings for both meters and they will alter my bill accordingly.
It's now time to move out so I phoned up to ask what I need to do and they said phone back on last day with a meter reading. I asked about giving both readings and the guy didn't know what I was going on about. I explained and he said according to all their systems, my meter number has been changed - except the bill I got a fortnight ago still has it shown wrong! (where is the banging you head against a brick wall smiley?)0
