i had a stand-up Potterton boiler which was about 25 years old... one CORGI guy wanted to replace the whole house system, rads and alll.. so i got another gas engineer to look, he said it was definitely safe to use for at least another year/olr two, gave me a LGSC, but said i should think about replacing it - but that the rads could be flushed through and replaced in a couple more years down the line... thus spreading the cost...
always get another quote if someone says its not possible... what ever it is in life...0 -
British Gas are the worst (IMO) culprits of using notices to scare people into thinking they have an unsafe appliance and must upgrade immediately to the latest appliance (at a vastly inflated margin via BG they hope)
Finding a good lcoal Corgi registered engineer should be top of everyone's list so that BG will have to change the way they operate
Older boilers if looked after will generally it seems last considerably longer as there is less to go wrong and the heat exchangers were made of stronger stuff. Modern condensing boilers have to be commissioned very precisely including getting all the crud out of your old radiator system otherwise they will not last very long at all. Also picking a boiler that has lots of whizzy electroinics is asking for future faults IMO
The fact that you are getting a new boiler now does not mean you will have the same guaranteed reliability unfortunately - lets hope the LL gets a good job done for you0 -
i bought a new Worcester boiler 4 years ago;... very good whizzy thing... just AFTER the warranty the Printed circuit board went wrong ... nearly £200 to replace0

Same here! New Potterton boiler for rented flat. Potterton changed the circuit board (upgraded in their speak) after a year. Now, if anything goes wrong, you can not repair, you have to buy a new circuit board package. Quoted last week for board and installation =£300. Expected life =about 4/5 years.
My own Potterton boiler of 20+ years going strong. Old Corgi guy opened it up last year and said it was clean as a whistle and burning the right colour.FREEDOM IS NOT FREE0 -
If the test in 2009 Appliance safe was marked as "No" then the testing engineer should have isolated the appliance. However an incorrect PRV termination could just be not to current standards or could be unsafe and should be confirmed.
As has been said BG are notorious for trying to drum up replacement buisiness by scaremongering.0 -

Not a Potterton Suprima by any chance? Renowned in the trade. You can buy refurbished circuit boards on a swap basis (you send in your faulty board) from cetltd.com (These must be fitted by a Gas Safe person in a rented property.)A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0
