mould in the house

I have a mould problem with our house in the winter. We live in a terraced house that was built in 1900's and we are getting black mould spots in the walls of the property. The problem gets worse in the winter, it seems like a never ending battle of cleaning the walls down every month to remove it. I have tried various mould removing paints and nothing seems to help. I also have a dehumidifier in the house to try and help it.

Does anyone else have this problem and what things help? Also are there any company's that will come out and have a look at the problem?

It's either going to be lack of ventilation or something outside (drains/guttering) that's causing the problem. The better insulated the property the more likely a lack of ventilation is the cause - but check for damaged gutters etc too.

Clean the walls with either diluted bleach of mould killer and let it dry

I tend to line walls with polystrene lining paper, although only 1-2mm thin it does make a difference, then apply wallpaper and repaint

You can get mould because of other things like faulty guttering, roofing or the bricks are porous and need to apply a product like Thompsons water seal to prevent brick from being porous

    Usually its down to condensation

Ok thanks for the info people. I don't think its down to faulty guttering but I will check. I seem to be trying to trying to clean the walls every month other wise it gets really bad. I just cant wait for the summer to come so I don't have this problem any more.
  • Running a de-humidifer will remove moisture from the walls and help keep the black spot at bay.
