faulty aspire one netbook

Hi All,

I bought an aspire one from PCWorld online in June 2008 which has suddenly died on me - just turned itself off and now won't turn on again. I've googled around for all sorts of ways to fix it and tried blind flashing the bios but nothing's worked.

I know consumer rights say purchases should last a reasonable amount of time, is 19 months reasonable for a netbook?

One of the first things I did when I got it was to install more RAM which meant completely disassembling it, I'm sure this voided my warranty but would it also affect my consumer rights?

I've also contacted Acer who just said it was out of warranty so I'd have to pay for them to look at it and then pay more to have it fixed once they've told me what's wrong

Thanks for any help anyone can give!

Write to PC World customer services (sorry, but the stores won't be able to get any further than you):
Customer Contact Centre, PO Box 1687, Sheffield, S2 5YA

The only way your fitting the RAM would affect your rights would be if you had fitted it improperly, or if the RAM failed and caused the problem. You'll probably have to get a report detailing the fault.

  • Thanks Esqui! What sort of report would this be that I'd need?

I would think taking the netbook to a local computer repairer and getting them to do a short report about what has caused the fault and if, in their opinion, it should have failed so early

  • I've sent them a letter by recorded delivery which arrived with them yesterday. I'll give them 14 days to respond before I send another letter...
