Carpet Fitting - rough guide to cost?

Hi, hope someone can help please

After a freezing winter, I have decided to remove the 'trendy laminate' and totally replace all of it throught the house with decent carpet and thermal underlay :j I am going to source everything myself ie underlay, carpets etc and will need a carpet fitter. I have checked the main carpet stores and they say that fitting is £2.50pm. I imagine that whilst you are (hopefully) assured quality work they will take a cut of this and even 50p a meter difference will give me a large saving due to size of house. Has any one any one used a private carpet fitter recently and could you give an indication of how much they were charging per square meter, and what they did for that, (ie fit underlay and carpet, or just carpet etc) so I can qauge how realistic any quotes I get are...also any tips on what to ask etc would be really helpful too!

Thanks :)

We had carpets fitted earlier in the year and everyone quoted us the same price of £2.50 per metre, cost us £80 in the end and there didnt seem to be an alternative/cheaper option.
  • You may have to pay an extra lump sum for them to do hall, stairs and landing as these are much more time consuming than the rest of the house. Perhaps an extra £100?
We are within the M25 (but not london) and paid £300 I think for fitting roughly 70 sqm, including all door bars and the hall stairs and landing.
Where are you Tia? We found £2.50 wasn't realistic for where we are... (after getting laughed at a few times!)
  • Thanks, I wasnt sure how much to pay or what to expect, I have in the region of 100 s/m plus a large hall /landing and gallery. I was looking for an idea as even 50p a metre difference would amount to over £50 mind you after paying out for the carpet and underlay etc £50 is a small saving but as a certain supermarket says 'every little helps' ..... I will ring around some local independants and see what quotes I get.

£60 for hall stairs and landing. But that was probs about £2.50 / m 2

Would resent paying that much for flat space with much less work to do.... takes them no time at all

I had one room done with the 'free fitting'. Got the blokes number as he did a good job and he was an independant contractor. He did the rest for £1.50 sqm, I provided carpet and underlay, he provided grippers and door bars.
  • Hi,

I am near Sandy, Bedfordshire and I need to lay 130 sqm in a new build so a straight forward job (empty rooms, no bathrooms & no stairs involved). I would be interested in details of a fitter for £1.50 sqm.
    Thanks

my auntie had a new carpet fitted last friday.
fit cost was 2.50 per metre.

  • Why not try a wool carpet with a wool rich felt underlay... that really makes your room feel incredibly warmer and warm underfoot
