Black screen on dell laptop

Options
Please can anyone help me
Last night I turned off my dell laptop and it gave me the option of shutting down with windows update . I did this and the computer crashed and wouldnt switch off. I then had to turn the power off to get it to switch off.
Now it wont load up again. It powers up but then goes to a page that says windows didnt shut down properly and gives me the option of starting windows normally, or in safe mode but wont go in either of them and just goes to a grey/black screen.
Have googled advice and nothing working.
Would appreciate any advice.
thanks in anticipation x

What happens when you press F8 OR Inserting your Windows XP installation CD-ROM and booting from CD-ROM :- any possibility of using the Recovery Console and doing a repair install...

...in Vista the recovery console has now been renamed as the System Recovery Options menu - but same principles apply Elaine; boot up with the Vista disc and select the option Repair your computer. Even if you do not have the original Vista disc, try booting up with any recovery disc that Dell may have provided. Or do you have the availability of a recovery partition (once again, on boot-up).

Tried the dell disc and would only let me restore by losing everything on hard drive( which i dont want to do). All other options are disabled.

And when you press F8 on boot-up what other options are provided. There should be provided an Advanced Boot Options menu (this is without inserting any disc).
