I want to copy emails in Outlook to my new Gmail address

I have severed my ties with Virgin. I used an NTL (Virgin) email address in Outlook and now want to have a copy of all my saved emails in outlook and have them in my G- mail account.
What I should have done is to forward the emails to Gmail when my Virgin account was still live. I can no longer send emails from outlook. Is there a way that I can copy and paste them into gmail or a folder? I have a new external HD and can I copy there?
If someone is kind enough to reply, can it be in 'Layman' terminology.
Thanks.

I did exactly this when I purchased a G1 "googlephone" and wanted all my old email history on my gmail account.
I set up my gmail in outlook express as an "imap" account. Search google for "gmail imap outlook setup"
Then once its all set up, just drag your old emails across to the gmail account within outlook express.
The benefit of doing it this way is the emails will appear under their original dates, whereas if you forward them they will appear under the date you forwarded.
Hope this helps.0 -
Thank you very much for your reply! I was lost, thinking what to do next.

ps, I have just googled and wonder if this is what I need, as I'm unable to send anything via Outlook.0 -
Yes it should work fine as it will be the Gmail account you set up doing the sending (synchronising actually).0
