Does the netbook have a lan port?, if so try connecting to the router via a wired connection.

If this works, then it could be your routers wireless security set up to only allow certain MAC addresses to connect (the MAC adrress is a 16 digit number built in to every piece of networking equipment).

I suspect you are running this using Mandriva Linux as this machine ships standard with this OS or XP as an option. The solution may not be straightforward and you may end up needing some tech support to fix this problem.

Please state your operating system, it might help.

There are thousands of things you can do to sort out this problem, many of these are listed click here.

I am intrigued that you know you are 'connected' what happens when you go Start > Run... type in 'cmd' then type 'ipconfig' on the flashing line? Does it display your correct IP settings?

Obviously, if you connected this machine directly to your router using a cable, you would have more idea of the problem and it's solution.

obviously u think i am thick,,it is connected to net just this closing down problem ty for ur help

I thought the site for diagnosing network problems had some good info, but lacked the important bits altogether.
Speaking as a qualified network engineer, the correct procedure as used throughout industry is as follows -

    1. Bring-up a console - in Win XP/Vista/7 goto 'START -> RUN, in the box enter 'cmd' this brings-up an MS-Dos emulator. In Linux just open a terminal.
    2. In Windows enter 'ipconfig /all', in Linux enter 'ifconfig'.
    3. Does the output from step 2 show the following - IP Address, Subnet mask & Default Gateway?. If 'no' then go to step 4, otherwise procceed from step 5.
    4. Enter 'ping 127.0.0.1'. What this does is to use a reserved address built-in to every network port as a test system. It will send 4 packets of data to the port and time how long in takes to receive a reply. If you get back a message such as 'unreachable', or 'timed out' then you may have a hardware failure.
    5. Your TCP/IP stack may be corrupt. Within Windows XP, you need to go to the start menu and then 'networking'. From here, you need to look for 'TCP/IP' and select it, un-install it, then re-install it.
    6. Re-try step 4, if you still get an error message, then you definately have a hardware failure, otherwise you can try opening-up your browser and seeing if you can surf the net.
Most people forget about re-installing the TCP/IP stack. A failure of this will cause all sorts of problems such as the inability to open web pages & send/receive emails.
A very experianced tutor and fully-qualified CISCO engineer I know spent 4 hours trying to fix his network at home before he remembered about the tcp/ip stack thing.
