Pots for my carrots......

I grew carrots last year in once of these plastic storage box in my garden: http://www.plasticboxshop.co.uk/pack-of-5-32ltre-maxi-storemaster-crate-496-p.asp

The plastic was a bit brittle though and cracked underneath with the weight of the soil. I was thinking about using a couple of these this year: http://www.plasticboxshop.co.uk/large-40lt-dark-green-flexi-trug-274-p.asp

Any thoughts about whether this would be OK (not sure how easy it would be to get holes in the bottom for drainage) or any other suggestions for containers to grow my carrots in?

    Ask at a supermarket or florist for some of the black plastic buckets that the flowers come in?
    import this
  • I grew some last year in some plastic window boxes that had been thrown out at the tip. I was worried that they might not be deep enough, but I had a really good crop of Early Nantes (seed from Lidl). We had some tonight and they were delicious!

    Supermarket flower buckets will only hold about 12 carrots by the time you've thinned them out, but the buckets are free or 8 for 99p in Morrisons. For more long term use, try 99p builders buckets - these can frequently be found in skips as they tend to get chucked after the handle falls off or they crack ;)
  • I used these exact same 40 litre tubs last year for my carrots and drilling holes through the bottom was not a problem, id advise getting a couple of bricks to sit the tub on so it can drain and i plan to do the same this year, they are like a strong flexi tub and are great :)

    Hi,

    I grew my carrots in one of these last year with no problem. I burnt holes in the bottom and put pieces of old bricks in the bottom. It was my first year growing carrots and i didn't thin them much (i couldn't bear to part wit hthem!):o, but i got LOADS of baby carrots in there! :D

    Good luck and happy sowing!

    Ive been thinking about getting these. They are a twin for potatoes so wondering whether carrots would work in these or similar?

    I also like the builders trugs too, you can get these in nice colours- should look nice on the patio plus they are cheaper, I will go with one like that for carrots, we are going to do something like a Paris Market in tubs as we are doing our growing on a roof terrace

    Thanks - did think about those (I've got some for my spuds). For info, I've been to two different Wyvale garden centres near me and both had potato planters at half price (about £7 for three). They didn't have the opening flap to get them out, but otherwise fine!

    Trick for Carrots, is a pot about 12" deep, and stood on a stand / bricks so that they are at least 12" (30cm) above the ground, and away from nearby bushes, then you'll have no Carrot Fly!! as it only flies up to 12" from the ground.

    You could use an old veg oil can from a takeaway, with some holes punched in the bottom with a nail and a hammer.
    My Mind wanders, if found please return.
