I'm looking for a free Netnanny type software.
I want to make sure that my boys can't access 'bad' sites when I'm not there

Thanks

You should be able to set up Web filtering via your firewall. I use ZoneAlarm Pro to stop 'accidents' happening with my children but as Laura says they soon get to the age where they will know what to do!

    Hi,

The firewall will not help protect againt accessing "bad"/pornographic sites as a category (unless you have told it to stop every individual "bad" site). Firewalls are there simply for security measures (i.e. to stop hacking inbound or outbound).

You can try and google for "free content filtering" software. I did once and got some results, but my boys aren't old enough to use the computer so I didn't bother implementing it.

BTW: as far as I can see Zonealarm Pro does not block "dodgy" categories as a whole.

    Hope this helps

    Thanks all
I'm going to try IE Content Advisor, will have to reset the setting as I was not allowed to view this page

My boys are teenagers and I'm sure they'll manage to get around this, but at least it'll be a deterent.

I have a Netnanny. It did cost me $25, but I thought it was worth it. I downloaded it from Ntnanny.com. My 15 year old was accessing !!!!!!,not any more!
The good thing is, you can set as many users as you like, and have individual settings for each, so me, my partner and 20 year old daughter have no restrictions, son has loads! You can also limit the time on he internet he currently has 4 hours a day, then it cuts off. He doesn't have to use it all at once, but you have to log on before connecting, otherwise it won't connect.
I have been very pleased with it, and it wasn't that expensive.

I have a full version of Zone Alarm on CD Rom. I no longer use Zone Alarm so you are welcome to have it if you want it.
You can email an address where you want it sent to through private message through this site.
I may be able to dig up a few other bits and pieces of software too so you wont be stuck for choice

I use K9 Web Protection on my kids networked pc's.
Its free and it does what it says on the tin without being too technical.

Re ZoneAlarm Pro with Web filtering

'content filter component of ZoneAlarm Pro, this is a useful feature if you have a child. The default settings are to block various classes of unsuitable content for minors. ZoneLabs have integrated content control technology from Cerberian. The content control features seem to work well, blocking sites via FQDN and IP Address.'

Although not perfect, has given us several years without a problem!
