Fleas

  • You need to treat the dog and the cats at the same time with Frontline or Stronghold, vacuum thoroughly and spray the carpets and soft-furnishings where the animals lie with a product which contains Insect Growth Regulator, some of which are easily available retail so you don't have to get it from the vet. Look out for the following chemical ingredients: Permethrin (insecticide), Tetramethrin (fast-acting insecticide) and Methoprene (the insect growth regulator) this is the wonder ingredient which when in contact with the larvae will prevent the eventual pupae from being able to hatch into adult fleas. Hey presto! The flea breeding-cycle is broken. Don't forget to wash all pet bedding in HOT water.

After treating the pets and using the spray you should see a lot fewer fleas but the ones which have already pupated will continue to hatch as there has been no insecticide invented yet which will kill them until they do hatch. Once hatched the Frontline or Stronghold will do its work even if the insecticides don't. In order to encourage the pupae to hatch you should vacuum frequently as it's the noise and vibration which does this as well as carbon-dioxide in exhaled breath.

Honestly, if you don't want to get your Local Authority's pest-control people (some of which charge for this service) or an independent pest-control firm to do this for you it is possible to get to grips with it yourself. I had a deeply vexatious flea infestation in my home some years ago and did it myself for less than it would have cost otherwise.
  • Fleas will go any where that is warm! any tight spots, rugs, carpets, furnature, pet beds, be sure to hoover and clean all beds and furnature, my dad had same problem, he used a product called skoosh, which contains no pesticides so having 2 other cats he didnt have to evacuate them!! that seemed to do the trick, and he also used Frontline spot on to keep controll of the fleas on the cats.
