Rights with a washing machine

Hi,

My sister purchased a washing machine from Currys 6 weeks ago. Last night it blew up! She phoned Currys and they informed her that because it is outside 28days, they will have to send out an engineer to examine the machine before repairing or replacing. Can they do this? She just wants her money back, but is she within her rights to request this?

Not really. They aren't forced to refund at all outside the 28 days, it is one of a number of potential resolutions.

If your sister has been using the washing machine for the last 6 weeks or so it would probably be safe to assume that she's no longer within a reasonable time to reject it outright for a full refund, regardless of any specified period offered by the retailer themselves. Therefore in answer to your question, yes they are fulfilling their obligations to send out an engineer to examine the machine prior to a repair or replacement. Your sister has the right to ask for a refund but she can't insist on one.
