Painting old wood

Hi,
We are thinking of painting the wood (door frame, skirting) which was previously painted dull white (no shine) in our house, its been no shining white since we bought it,i am confused whether to paint it with oil based gloss or oil based eggshell. Whats the diffrence apart from shiny finish, are both just as durable and what would look nice. Price diffrenence is about 4 pound which is isnt much. Do i also need undercoat with the eggshell.
Thanks in advance

you shouldn't need u/c if using eggshell/ satinwood - should use it if glossing , i find that eggshell is quite popular at the mo and is just as tough0

Depends what you want tbh. We've used the gloss for white in our kitchen and eggshell for the grey in our livingroom and bathroom. The eggshell is less shiny than the gloss, so it works well if the rest of the room is quite toned down.0

Thanks for the replies, we have matt magnolia on the walls, i think eggshell will be good, does it look good on stair care and hand rails too ? we have a little bit of bare wood should i primer then undercoat then eggshell or primer and then eggshell.
Thanks again.0
