Can I go on the 'dole'?

I'v worked all year on a student placement and earnt a decent bit of money. However my placement is now over and i'm due to go back to University at the end of September, start of October. I'm not able to start a part time job now either (away on holiday for 3 weeks so unlikely anywhere will take me) so I'm I able to go on the dole up until I resume Uni?

How do you propose that you are going to sign on when you are on holiday? Really, you knew this situation was going to come up- why didn't you save money from your IP year instead of putting yet more strain on tax payers money?

No, as a student on a full time course, you are not eligible to claim JSA. You are classed as a full time student from the date you start to the day you finish your course.

If your uni or students union has a job shop you might be able to get some short term work, or try agencies?

I've heard you are eligible to "sign on" in between student loan periods???

However I have a job for the summer and for when I start back at uni:)
  • Why not sign up with a temping agency, many employers often want people to cover for holidays for a week or so at a time.

IMO signing on is a bit lame

Sorry, that isn't true. The only full time students who can claim benefits are lone parents or students with disabilities and they can claim Income Support. The only students who can claim JSA during the summer are those who are one half of a student couple who have a child.

    I concur.
Until you officially finish your course, you will not be entitled to JSA.
This is usually a date given to you by your uni after your final exams (but not necessarily after your 'graduation' ceremony).
You then have other hoops to jump through but you should be entitled to it. Come back in a few years time and as again.
OR, just call the job center. They'll confirm it all.
  • I would rather be skint than sign on, especially for such a short space of time. Surely you could pick up casual work such as working behind a bar. Even working a few hours would pay better than jsa, and you would'nt have anyone breathing down your neck like the job centre would be.

    Yeah you cant sign on.

Students cant sign on. Your classed as a student from the official start date of your course, to the official end date.

    Unlucky.

in Germany, people are ashamed to go on the dole, for putting strain on tax payers money

It's not even worth it - get a temping job - you'll earn much more.
