Internet speed

Options
I can only get 1.3 MB. I have phoned sky and CS said I should be getting up to 8 mg. Is it because my computer is not connected to main phone? The main phone socket is in the hall. Also I am not wireless. Thanks

    Hi
    Be careful what you're measuring.
The ISPs quote their figures in Mbps.
    That's Mega bits per second.

Many other people use measurements in MB/s.
    That's Mega Bytes per second.

    They are different.

So when you tested your download speed, what was it?

Making changes to internal wiring can speed up an internet connection. Depending on how you have it, it could be picking up noise which means that the internet connection will run slower.

Where have you got the 1.3MB from?

As bat999 says, there's bytes and bits. The symbol for a byte is "B" and the symbol for a bit is "b". Speed is normally quoted in bits per second. The "mega" means a million and is depicted by "M".

So broadband speed is normally shown as x Mbps (x mega bits per second), for example 8Mbps.

I assume you are plugged into an extension which is not the best thing to do.
However the performance of extensions (I'm assuming its hard wired) can be improved if you are feeling brave.
You need to undo the cover of your master socket and disconnect the wires to pin 3 on the back of your faceplate. Go to the extension and do the same thing. What you are doing is removing the bell wire which is not required.
    Read this:

Actually before doing anything else, plug your router into the test socket at your master phone point, log onto your router and obtain your router statistics.
Post them and we can see whats going on. Read this:

They say upto 8meg as the distance dictates what speed you can actually get eg distance from exchange, maybe 1.3 mb is all you can get

    Hi
That speed test site is giving me a fairly accurate reading just now. It gives me 9824Kbps on my 10Mb system.
So if it's telling you only 1304Kbps and your system is supposed to be 8Mb then there's something definitely wrong.
I suppose it's between you and Sky now. You're paying them for something and they aren't providing it.

As penrhyn says, you need to find out what speed your router is connecting at. This will tell you the speed of the link between you and your local exchange.

Speed test websites test the speed from you to the location of the speed test website. Any individual part of that chain may be causing the slow connection. At busy times expect slower test results.
