OK, I have found a few threads asking if they get DLA, will their HB go up too. The short answer is yes, it will. But it's not as straight forward as getting DLA = HB goes up by a set amount. I am not going to go into any more personal details then I will put in this message here so don't ask because I was put off by one of the replies I got. I am just trying to help as I have first hand experience dealing with how DLA affects my HB (LHA - Local Housing Allowance) as I am a private tenant. If you are a council tenant, I don't know if this info will help.

Whatever I say here is what I was told by DWP and the charity for disabled people attached to my local council, as far as I know, it should be the same across the board, but do check with your local councils. Again, if you are a council tenant, I don't know how the HB is calculated. I only know how LHA is calculated.

So if you are getting DLA, you can get 3 different types of premium depending your DLA. These rates are only accurate for 2009, it might go up or down for the next tax year. It might stay the same, I don't know.

Disability Premium - £27.50 / week

You will get it as long as you are getting a qualifying benefits, DLA is one of them.

Enhanced Disability Premium - £13.40 / week

You will get it if you are getting the highest rate for the care component of DLA

Severe Disability Premium - £52.85 / week
You will get it if you are getting the Disability Premium, getting the middle / highest rate for care with DLA, living alone and no one is claim carer allownace to look after you. If you are joined tenant or renting a room in a shared house, I think you would be qualified too.

If you get any of the Disability Premium, your income disregard for HB will go up to £20 / week than £5 a week for a single person.

I cannot tell you the difference for couple and / or with children or pensioners as I am a working age single person.

See these 2 site if you don't trust me.

JS stands for Job Seeker Allowance, I do apologise if this confuses anyone. The rates for the aboves Disability Premiums will not be added to your total HB just like that, these will be added to your personal allownace used to calculate your HB, this is why your HB will go up. So once again, it's not your HB will go up, it's your personal allownace that goes up, therefore your HB will too.

Your personal allowance used in the HB calculation is in effect the Job Seeker Allowance you will get if you don't have a job. So if you are getting DLA then both your HB and Job Seeker Allowance will go up.

All these premiums apply to all means tested benefits. I don't know what else are means tested benefits apart from HB and Job Seek.

Hopes this helps.

    Here is the full list:

    Disability Premium - single 27.50
    Disability Premium - couple 39.15
Enhanced Disability Premium - couple 19.30
Enhanced Disability Premium - single / lone parent 13.40
Enhanced Disability Premium - child 20.65
Severe Disability Premium - single 52.85
Severe Disability Premium - couple (one qualifies) 52.85
Severe Disability Premium - couple (both qualify) 105.70
    Disabled Child Premiums 51.24
    Carer Premium 29.50
    ESA Components
    Work-related activity 25.50
    Support 30.85

These are added to your personal allowance.

If you are already in receipt of the maximum HB/ LHA for your area/ eligible rooms, you will not receive any more payment by virtue of the additional premiums.

If you need further info, post some more details on the Benefits board and we can check any entitlement is correct.

(ExTra - your SDP amount is wrong.)

Just to clarify, the usual abbreviation for Jobseekers Allowance is JSA. The DWP/ JCP use the term JSA.

The premiums do not apply to all means tested benefits - they do not apply to ESA.

Sorry, that was a typo mistake. Thanks for pointing it out.

By the way this website is pretty accurate for calculating your benefits entitlement

I was told these apply to all means tested benefits, coz I was about to lose this job I am still doing coz I got really ill towards the end of last year and I was told I would get the £50ish a week plus the premiums. Maybe she was wrong then.

Just checked online, you can get the Enhanced and Severe Disability Premium with ESA, but not the Disability Premium. I guess the best this to do is to ask if and when you need to make a claim.

Are you able to explain what these are? I get high rate care DLA and high rate mobility DLA, plus income support with severe disability premium. I don't have a paid job but do volunteer work, but I never heard of work-related activity or support.

It's for those who claim ESA. (Employment support allowance) This replaced IS for incapacity & IB in October 2008.
