The C5's suspension is a bit different from the Xantia, XM and going back a bit BX's (which I had for a wee while).
The C5 I thought was all sealed and maintenance free for 5 years if I remember right from launch. The obvious question being 'what happens after 5 years then?'!
The car's got 170,000 miles on it - take it to a garage and get some work done to it. You'd have had to change the shock absorbers on any other car my now!
  • We normally replace the spheres on them as they start to leak after about 4/5 years.
  • Thanks for all your support.

I've decided it not worth spending the money on to repair. I always find that once cars start costing you money it just never stops. You repair one thing and something else goes wrong.

So instead i'e decided to sell it as it is in the auction and take what ever i get for it.

I'm in the market for a 06/07 plate Astra now. Yipeeeeeeeee.

  • So rather than spending 80 quid on new spheres, you'd rather spend 5000 on a new car which ould need stuff doing to it lol. Now MSE...

Might be smarter than spending 80quid on spheres before working out that they don't control the height of the car? I'd spend some of that money getting the opinion of someone who understands how the suspension works ;)

The spheres are nitrogen gas reservoirs, they define the stiffness and rate of the springing according to the volume and pressure of the gas. The actual ride height is controlled by the volume of oil in the hydraulic ram, which is controlled by valves, sensors, ECU and the HP pump.
  • Well as its the spheres that leak, this is why we replace them and the cars levels its self out...
